Nappies: To Cloth or Not to Cloth
Nappies: To Cloth or Not to Cloth
I always knew I would use cloth nappies on my baby if/when I had one. There is something about seeing a baby running around in a soft colorful nappy that appealed to me more than just the paper diapers that are SO mainstream. Yes, I chose cloth nappies because I liked the way they looked! It wasn’t until AFTER we started using them that I realised the thousand other reasons to love using cloth nappies!
1. They absorb so much better!
When Hudson was first born, we had him in regular nappies until he grew into the ones we had bought him, which didn’t take long. He wet through regular nappies within an hour or two, but after we made the switch he stayed dry for ages! Even after he would wet the nappy, his little bum stayed dry thanks to the microfibre inserts! To this day, we have never had to change his nappy in the middle of the night! I can’t say they aide in sleeping because he is a nightmare when it comes to sleeping through the night, but at least he has a dry bum! They also have so many options for inserts like hemp, bamboo, and charcoal, that range in price and ability!
2. He has never had diaper rash!
This has been some kind of a miracle. We were so prepared for diaper rash. We had all the best diaper rash creams from the all-natural to the heavy duty. We still have two HUGE tubs of sudocrem sitting in his room, but as of now, their only use has been on my husbands face to help dry out his skin! I contribute this lack of sore bum directly to our dear cloth nappies! When I visited family in the U.S., we used cloth nappies occasionally because it was easy when we were traveling, and after just a few uses, his poor bum was so sore. It was just proof to us that we were doing the right thing! I don’t know if it’s the chemicals in the disposables or just their inability to keep a bum dry, but after using both, there was a clear difference.
3. They are easy to use!
Even when I started, the thought of having to touch his pooey, wet, stinking nappies turned me off quite a bit. On top of that, the thought of putting those same pooey, wet, stinking nappies in the same washing machine that I use to wash my delicates was not a pleasant one. HOWEVER contrary to popular belief, cleaning cloth nappies is not the nightmare that it seems. The starter set that I bought included a nappy bin and two laundry bags as well as an antibacterial, environmentally friendly and biodegradable nappy cleanser to keep them extra fresh. Literally, all I have to do is take the nappy off Hudson and put it in the laundry bag and then put the laundry bag in the wash. I don’t even have to touch them again until they’re clean! Plus, because they are made of microfibre, they dry so fast which means I don’t have to use the dryer!
Now that he is having solid poos, it’s even easier. The biodegradable liner that you put on top of the nappy collects the solid poos so that all you have to do is pick that up and flush it down the toilet, and if the diaper isn’t soaked through, you can continue using it!
If for NO other reason, I would choose these because they have saved us SO much money and time! We never run out, so we don’t have to run to the store at obscure hours in the night to buy more and, in fact, we don’t have to buy anything at all. After our original purchase, we have not had to purchase anything extra except more of the nappy cleanser which is optional. Bambino Mio offers nappies that grow with your baby so that one nappy will last from birth until they are potty trained. On top of that, we are planning on reusing them with our second child! So, the £250 investment we made into purchasing a starter pack is all we REALLY need! Saying this, the estimate for one child from birth to two is £800 in diapers and if you’re planning on having more than one, well you do the math.
**If you’re anything like me, you may become an addict and start exploring other brands as well which can incur additional costs.
5. Saving the earth and all that!
Regular nappies take hundreds of years to decompose…So when your great great great great great great grandchild is born, the nappies from your baby will still be in a landfill somewhere. I’m not a hippie and I didn’t choose cloth nappies to save the earth, but it is something to think about. If you like the convenience of throwing a nappy away, look into GDiapers or GNappies. We use those when we are going out of the house because they are easier to throw away. You can buy biodegradable inserts that then you can just throw away after they are dirty and put a new one in. The main word here being, biodegradable! They are the only biodegradable nappy on the market right now and they are incredible and so cute.
6. Obviously, they are adorable.
I can’t help but love seeing Hudson crawling around in his bright, soft, beautiful nappies! I love knowing that his little bum is soft and dry! They are the cutest!

I’ve had a lot of women come to me saying, “but what if they are too hard for my husband to use. He likes the ease of disposable.” We love our cloth nappies and even my HUSBAND who had never changed a nappy in his life says he would never choose regular nappies to cloth. He LOVES them. I’ve even heard him talking to his friends about how amazing they are! You don’t have to jump straight in, you can always try one occasionally or just around the house.
