A Weekend Away At Watergate Bay
A Weekend Away At Watergate Bay
Parenting can be exhausting. As amazing as motherhood is, sometimes I just need a break. With the craziness of life, it’s easy to get caught up and forget to take those special moments with the people you love. By the time my husband gets home from work and Hudson is in bed, it’s time for us to cook dinner, wash the dishes and if we have time, do a load of laundry. Often we are too tired to stay up past 9 and then the next day it all starts over again. All of this to say, we desperately needed a little getaway; a refresher. The Watergate Bay Hotel was everything we could have every asked for and more.
The Watergate Bay Hotel is perfectly situated on the North Cornwall Coast with a cosy beach ideal for surfers and beach dwellers alike. Even in the middle of winter, we spent more than our fair share of time roaming the beach in our wellies and watching the sunset.
When we weren’t on the beach or doing any of the other awesome activities made available by the hotel, we enjoyed relaxing in our room. To be more specific, we enjoyed the bath tub. I think all three of us would agree that the hot tub was a focal point in our stay! The room was gorgeous (and pet friendly) with sea views, beachy vibes, and enough space for Hudson to run around while we relaxed in bed. Paradise.
The hotel itself is an adult-focused, family friendly hotel. Now, I know a lot of hotels say they are “family-friendly,” but I don’t know many hotels that offer childcare services throughout the day as well as babysitting services at night, oh and a separate dinner time for kids. Yes, you read that correctly. No matter where you are in the hotel, there is an option for the kids as well; family swim times, kids menus, outdoor play ground, the works! As a mom to a toddler, I loved that I didn’t have to worry about him. I knew that no matter what we did, it would be a holiday for him as well.
During our stay, we were able to have TWO dinners ALONE. Those of you who are parents know how magical that actually is. We had food prepared for us. We didn’t have to do the dishes. I even got dressed up and did my hair. It was almost too good to be true and if there weren’t photos, I might have thought it was a dream.
Speaking of food. I am willing to put my hand on a bible and say to you that the food and drinks we had at the Watergate Bay Hotel are on the very top of my list for best meals of my life (my husband will agree with that statement).
First things first; breakfast. There is nothing more annoying than getting up at kill me o’clock with Mr. Hudson every day, HOWEVER watching the sunrise whilst eating all-you-can-eat waffles and bacon made it totally worth it. Their breakfast buffet is on point. As per everything else in the hotel, there is something for everyone. If you’re a fatty like me and want to eat 5 million waffles (that you get to make yourself) with nutella every morning; CHECK! If you are like…on a diet or just miserable, you can have a fresh smoothie of the day or a grapefruit. They even give you the choice of streaky bacon or back bacon. Let’s be honest, I tried both!
The first night we went to Zacry’s, the main restaurant at the hotel, and I can’t put into words the level of service and perfection of our meal. My husband and I got the steak meal for two and the steak actually melted in my mouth. I have never experienced the ‘melt-in-your-mouth’ sensation until I had that steak, and it was unlike anything I have ever had before. My husband and I just sat there in silence devouring everything (those of you who know me know that I am rarely silent).
Going back to the amazing service, my being pregnant meant that I couldn’t indulge in any of their amazing cocktails. While they did have a nice list of mocktails, I had my eye on a spicy cocktail that I really wanted to try, and guess what was delivered to my table by the bartender himself; a mocktail version of that cocktail. Guys, it was everything I ever dreamed of and even looked luxurious! There is nothing better than amazing service, and throughout the entire weekend, we experienced nothing less than that from every member of staff.
Our other meals included mussels and burgers at the new and improved Beach Hut and fried chicken burgers and white hot chocolate at the Living Space. I also have to mention that I had about 10 white hot chocolates during my stay because they were exceptional and totally indulgent. PLUS, I can’t think of anything more relaxing than sitting on a couch in front of the fire, with a white hot chocolate, watching the rain clouds form over the ocean (in silence). I spent a lot of my time in the Living Space just enjoying peace and quiet. That is my kind of holiday.
A common theme at the Watergate Bay Hotel is the sea views. I am not kidding when I say no matter where you are in the hotel, you can see the ocean, even the infinity pool and open air hot tub! Although I wasn’t able to get in, I envied the people who were able to sit in the outdoor hot tub and watch the ocean. There is something invigorating about the contrast of the freezing cold ocean breeze and the steaming hot tub! It’s definitely the best spot in the house to snag a cheeky kiss and watch the sunset with the one you love.
Perhaps my favourite part of our stay was the massage. I have had a few massages in my time, but none that compared with the personalisation and expertise of this one. Because I am pregnant, I got a 60 minute pregnancy massage from Roxy. Before the massage even began, I was able to relax in my bath robe and sip luxury teas, coffees, or infused water. Once it was time for my massage, Roxy didn’t just treat me like any other client. She sat and asked me exactly what my needs were and how my pregnancy was going.
Throughout the massage, she paid special attention to my trouble zones and asked about pressure. I have never felt so close to heaven. I could have sat there all day. It was the first time in my pregnancy where I had total silence to myself to focus on the pregnancy and the baby. It was almost an emotional experience.
After the massage, instead of saying, ok, thanks! Bye! Roxy sat with me for an additional half hour talking about the issues she found in my back (there were a lot). She is so educated about pregnancy and the way it takes a toll on a woman’s body. I’ve been pregnant twice and she was teaching me things I never knew. Needless to say, I will be booking in for another massage in March. This time, I am getting her special pregnancy massage only taught in Hawaii and only practiced by THREE people in England. It physically creates space in your body for the baby and makes pregnancy more enjoyable for all parties! Count me in! Check out all their treatments, here.
The Watergate Bay Hotel was, even in the middle of winter, the perfect beach getaway. The relaxing sea views, delectable food and drinks, and endless amount to explore and do left us wishing we could stay forever. It was one of those vacations where, for just those few days, time stood still and all of life’s worries totally disappeared. The staff was helpful and kind, the facilities left you feeling like royalty, and everything in between was perfection.
Whether you are a couple looking for a romantic get-away or a family looking for something for everyone, the Watergate Bay Hotel really is the perfect place. You will never run out of things to do and see, and even when you think you have, you’ll discover something new. The smiling faces, the friendly dogs around every corner, and the ability to relax and indulge to your hearts content make the Watergate Bay Hotel a sanctuary for everyone.
